The 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), which started on June 11, has not ended yet. There are four matches left, including the semi-finals. In the meantime, the ‘festival’ of the Salah’s Coach’s farewell has started in the country.
After The Departure of The Salah’s Coach
Six coaches have lost their jobs so far, with the latest addition being Egypt coach Rui Vitoria. Apart from this, another person lost his job as the team feared to withdraw from the tournament.
7-time African champions Egypt exited this tournament in the last sixteen after losing a tiebreaker to DR Congo. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has informed the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) of the sacking of the coach after the Egyptian football team returned home from Ivory Coast. Not only Vitoria, but all members of his coaching staff have been terminated by Egypt.
Salah’s Coach
Former Benfica coach Vitoria took charge of Egypt in July 2022. According to the four-year contract, he is supposed to be in charge until the 2026 World Cup. He started well. Egypt won 12 of the first 14 matches under Vitoria. But Mohamed Salah’s team did not get the desired result in the African Cup of Nations.
Egypt did not win a match in the group stage before making it to the last sixteen. Draw 2-2 in all three matches with Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde. In between, Salah also got injured and left the team. They were eliminated before the quarter-finals after losing a tiebreaker to DR Congo.
The Departure of The Salah’s Coach
Before Vitoria, Algeria’s Jamel Belmadi, Ghana’s Chris Hughton, Tanzania’s Adel Amrochi and Ivory Coast’s Jean-Louis Gasser were hired after the team’s exit from the African Nations Cup. Apart from this, Tunisia’s Jalal Kadri and Gambia’s Tom Saintfit resigned themselves.
Meanwhile, Ivory Coast is still in the tournament. However, after a 4–0 loss to Equatorial Guinea in the final group stage match, Gase was replaced by his assistant Immers Faye. And Tanzania terminated Amrochi’s contract after the Confederation of African Football handed him an eight-match ban for misconduct.
Nigeria-South Africa and Ivory Coast-DR Congo will meet in the semi-finals of this year’s African Nations Cup. Both semi-finals are on Wednesday. The final is on February 11 in Abidjan.
